Space Heater Safety in Jasper & Dubois

Did you know that 50% of all home heating fires occur between December and February? Not only that, but half of them are caused by space heaters, resulting in over 350 deaths and 1,020 injuries each year.

That doesn’t mean that your Jasper or Dubois space heaters should go the way of your old 8-track player.  It just means you need to extremely careful with how you use them for the added safety and protection of your home and family

So if you plan on using a space heater this season, do so with caution and make sure you follow these important safety tips.

• Choose a space heater that has been tested and approved by a nationally recognized testing laboratory such as United Laboratories.

• Always read manufacturer’s instructions and discuss space heater safety with your family before use.

• Never use a space heater outdoors or in a bathroom, unless it is specifically intended for such use by the manufacturer.

• Keep the space heater on a flat surface, at least three feet away from upholstered furniture, window treatments, bedding, and all other flammable materials.

• Check the outlet and plug periodically. If the plug feels warm to the touch, turn the space heater off and unplug immediately. You might need to have your wiring checked by an electrician.

• Never use a space heater with a frayed cord, and avoid using extension cords unless absolutely necessary.

• Turn off and unplug the space heater when you leave the room, and do not leave it on while you sleep.

• Do not leave children unattended near a space heater.
