Sump Pump Installation | Sump Pump Repair

How to Keep Your Basement Dry & Damage-Free.

When the rain comes, when the snow melts, when the ground has absorbed all the moisture it can…these are the times that people with leaky basements fear the most. Because that’s when excess moisture is most likely to work its way inside their homes and wreak varying degrees of damage.

If your efforts to keep water out have not paid dividends, then your next best most is to remove of incoming water just as fast as it enters. How? With the combined use of a main sump pump and backup sump pump.

Sump Pumps

Main Sump Pum

Main Sump Pump | Primary Sump Pump

A primary (or main) sump pump is standard issue for homes prone to basement flooding. There are two varieties – submersible and pedestal. There are pros and cons of each, although a submersible pump also can move gunk accumulated in the pit while a pedestal pump only removes water. Pedestal pumps are noisier, too.

That aside, you want a pump that can effectively keep your basement dry and damage free. Primary pumps do a very effective job of that – until they develop a mechanical problem or your home loses power. Primary pumps, you see, run on electricity.

Backup Sump Pump

For the ultimate in protection, Messmer Mechanical recommends the combined installation of a primary and backup sump pump.

There are two types of backup sump pumps: battery-powered and water-powered. While there are pros and cons for each, they serve the same main purpose, and that is to engage once the main pump shuts off, regardless of the reason. That way, water will continue to be pumped from your basement until the threat of flooding has passed.

That’s right – with a backup sump pump, you won’t have to worry about a primary pump failure while you’re sleeping or away from home. Once the main pump shuts off, your backup will automatically engage and continue to operate until the main pump is back up and running.
