There are two types of backup sump pumps: battery-powered and water-powered. While there are pros and cons for each, they serve the same main purpose, and that is to engage once the main pump shuts off, regardless of the reason. That way, water will continue to be pumped from your basement until the threat of flooding has passed.
That’s right – with a backup sump pump, you won’t have to worry about a primary pump failure while you’re sleeping or away from home. Once the main pump shuts off, your backup will automatically engage and continue to operate until the main pump is back up and running.
