It’s bone-dry outside, there hasn’t been a drop of rain in weeks, no signs of water intrusion in your basement, yet the Sump Pump Running . What gives?
While there may be some instances where a sump pump can start running without rain, – like if you live near the water or the ground is saturated from snow and ice melt – it’s safe to say that a sump pump that runs continuously without rainfall is experiencing a problem that needs to be resolved.
Here are 4 common situations that can cause a sump pump to run non-stop.
Outside Forces
The water table – the boundary between the unsaturated soil above and saturated rock and sediment below – can change throughout the year. This is typically caused by living near a water supply or a steady barrage of rain. A sudden increase in groundwater or a rise in the water table can trigger a sump pump to activate and run seemingly without cause. An overflowing water source, a broken water pipe, construction, plus several other exterior conditions can increase the amount of groundwater around your home.
Snow Melt
Let’s say the ground is covered in snow and low temps caused that snow to harden into a virtual a sheet of ice. Suddenly, temps rise above freezing – sometimes significantly – causing the snow to melt and turn into water. That water then seeps into the ground where it triggers your pump to engage.
Clogged Drain
A clogged drain line can make a sump pump run even with no rain or excess water in sight. Over time, the drain line can fill with debris making it difficult for water to pass though. When water can’t drain it will build up in the basin causing the pump to malfunction. If not repaired, the pump can overheat and fail.
Sump Pump Failure
You can expect to get about 7 to 10 years out of your sump pump with proper maintenance. However, a pump can fail prematurely for a variety of reasons. If you suspect yours is on its last legs, have it inspected by a professional to determine whether repair or replacement is in order.
