Why Is My Ductless Mini-Split Leaking?

Why Is My Ductless Mini-Split Leaking?

Few issues are more frustrating to deal with than a water leak. But if that leak is coming from your ductless air system , it can be especially troubling. There are multiple reasons why your Ductless Mini -split could be leaking and it’s important to understand when a leak is easily repairable versus when it requires expert attention.

If you’re looking at stains on your walls beneath your ductless air unit, here four likely reasons why.

Clogged Drain Line

This is one of the most common reasons a ductless mini-split could leak water. Condensation forms as warm humid air comes into contact with the mini-split’s coils. Over time, dust, dirt, and other debris can clog the drainage system, causing water to accumulate in the drain pan of the mini-split instead of being directed towards the outdoor unit via the drain line. The accumulated water then has nowhere else to go but to leak down your wall.

Damaged Drain Pan

The drain pan catches the excess water dripping from the unit’s evaporator system. Yet this component can develop rust over time or be physically damaged by impact. If damaged or corroded badly enough, water can leak out instead of being stored until it is discharged by the drain line.

Dirty Air Filter

Over time, the air filter can accumulate dust, dirt, and other pollutants, resulting in obstructed airflow within the unit. Restricted airflow creates a drop in pressure which can cause the system to freeze. When this happens, the unit will shut down, the frost will melt, and the system will leak.

Refrigerant Leak

In the worst-case scenario, a unit may leak refrigerant rather than water. While this causes the same type of damage as a clogged air filter, the potential health hazards associated with a refrigerant leak requires the skilled worked of a licensed HVAC technician to resolve.
