Tips for Managing Holiday Stress

Tips for Managing Holiday Stress

The holiday season is upon us, and along with it come glad tidings, delicious food, and time spent with those we hold dear. Unfortunately, one unforeseen effect of this time of year is the added stress that it can cause. Making sure the house is ready, the food is perfect, and the presents are wrapped can be overwhelming to say the least. Add in family and relationship struggles, and things can quickly go from festive and joyous to ho-ho-hum.

Today we’re sharing some simple tips to help you manage holiday stress and enjoy all the season has to offer.

  1. Plan ahead.

This is a busy time of year for most everyone and it’s inevitable that some commitments will end up on the same day. Don’t feel pressure to attend every gathering. Give yourself permission to say “no”. If you are hosting, ask friends and family to pitch in by bringing a dish to share.

  1. Set a realistic budget.

Between the food and the presents, the holidays can be expensive. Make a budget and stick to it. While spending money on gifts for your loved ones is important, it’s also important to pay your bills. Avoid the urge to purchase gifts that you’ll be paying off well into next year.

  1. Find time to relax and unwind.

Light the fireplace, put on some music, or curl up with your favorite book. Create opportunities for some much needed rest and relaxation. Don’t forget to sneak in as much outdoor time as possible to soak up some Vitamin D.

  1. Keep up with healthy habits.

The holidays are notorious for ruining healthy habits. Commit to a short walk or workout each day, encourage friends and family to try a new outdoor activity like snow shoeing or sledding, eat healthy snacks like fresh fruit or vegetables, and don’t forget to get plenty of sleep.

  1. Share your feelings with someone you trust.

The holidays can bring up a lot of emotions. Accept your feelings and open up about them to others, like a therapist or trusted friend. It may be difficult to share at first but having someone to talk to is sure to make this time of year a little easier to bear.

  1. Respect differing opinions.

We all have different viewpoints, and those differences can take center stage during the holidays. Try your best to focus on things that are truly important and bring us together. But also understand that it’s ok to create healthy boundaries with those you simply cannot get along with.

  1. Be realistic.

There is only so much you can do. Be realistic with how much you can commit to and handle this season. Focus on being present with those who matter most instead of making sure everything is perfect.

  1. Take a break.

Don’t ignore about your own needs. If you are feeling run down, give your mind and body the rest it needs. Meditate, enjoy a hot bath, take a nap, go for a walk, watch a movie, or read a book. Take the time to do the things that bring you comfort, peace and joy.
