You know one of the best things about summer? It doesn’t include Thanksgiving or the holiday season. Which means it’s much easier (or should be!) to control your amount of food intake…or is it?
If you have kids at home, you also realize that summer is much different than the school year. They’re home, for starters, which means more meals at home…more snacks, too. And unless you’re very careful, some of the snacks can end up in your mouth which is fine if they’re the healthy variety, but otherwise not so fine.
The point is, summer can be a time of over-indulgence just as the holiday season can, so you can’t let down your guard if you want to keep those calories at bay.
Here are several healthy summer eating tips to help you accomplish that goal:
Eat a filling and healthy breakfast. Try a veggie omelet and a refreshing fruit smoothie, or whole wheat pancakes with a side of fruit salad.
Make healthy snacks readily available at home. Wash and cut up all those delicious fruits and vegetables before putting them in clear containers in the fridge. Kids are more likely to grab them if they’re in plain view.
Set limits on treats. No, you don’t have to be the popsicle police; moderation is key when it comes to enjoying your favorites.
Be prepared. Consider packing nutritious foods for the park, pool, or beach instead of hitting the drive-thru. Veggies, crackers, and hummus make for great snacks, and a wrap is the perfect portable lunch.
Switch it up. If you love to grill, change it up every now and then with veggie skewers or a veggie pizza; after all, no one can live on hot dogs and burgers alone!
Check the labels. If your family is craving something salty or sweet and indulgent, choose items that are minimally processed, made with 5 ingredients or less. Or make your own.
