It’s not uncommon to experience a sudden drop in your Jasper low water pressure. Especially when, for example, you’re taking a shower and someone else starts up the washing machine at the same time. However annoying that might be, it’s not a huge cause for concern: at least as it pertains to your home plumbing system.
However, should you notice a decrease in water pressure throughout your entire home, or low flow from a specific fixture that appears to have no obvious cause, it’s definitely worth looking into. That seemingly minor problem could quickly turn into a costly repair if ignored.
There are a number of causes for low water pressure. And to diagnose the cause, you must first determine whether it’s a whole-house or localized problem.
Whole-house water pressure drop
If you’re experiencing whole-house water pressure issues, perhaps the cause is work being performed on the public water or sewage system. You can contact your utility company to find out. If that’s the case, full pressure will be restored once the work is completed.
If, however, all’s quiet on the town or city water system, check your main water supply shut off valve and make sure that it is fully open. A valve that is even slightly turned from the open position can restrict water flow.
Once you confirm that the shut off valve is open, check the valve for signs of wear or corrosion. Damaged valves should be replaced to keep water flowing at normal rates.
Finally, in older homes with steel water pipes, years of mineral build-up can corrode and partially close the pipes. In that case, the pipes will probably have to be replaced.
Localized low-pressure
If a single fixture is acting up while all other water sources are shut off, check to see if the supply valve under the sink is fully open.
Next, inspect the faucet aerator for clogs. Carefully remove the aerator and clean it with a descaling product or soak it in a 1:1 mixture of water and vinegar for a couple of hours. Then run both the hot and cold water, without the aerator, for several minutes each to flush out any remaining residue.
