    Main Sump Pump | Primary Sump Pump

    A primary (or main) sump pump is standard issue for homes prone to basement flooding. There are two varieties – submersible and pedestal. There are pros and cons to each, although a submersible pump also can move gunk accumulated in the pit while a pedestal pump removes water only. Pedestal pumps are noisy, too.

    That aside, you want a pump that can effectively keep your basement dry and damage free. Primary pumps do a very effective job of that – until, that is, they develop a mechanical problem, or your home loses power. Primary pumps, you see, run on electricity.

    Back-up Sump Pump

    For the ultimate in basement protection, Messmer Mechanical recommends the combined installation of a primary and back-up sump pump.

    There are two types of back-up sump pumps: battery-powered and water-powered. While their are pluses and minuses to each, they serve the same purpose – to engage automatically when the main pump shuts off, no matter what the reason. That way, water will continue to be pumped from your basement until the threat of flooding has passed.

    With a back-up sump pump on hand, you won’t have to worry about primary pump failure while you’re sleeping or away from home.
