Why is My Fridge Leaking?

As new and shiny as it might be, even a new refrigerator can leak. Worse, water leaks aren’t always easy to spot. So, new or older, you need to keep an eye on things to avoid costly water leaks and potential resulting damage.

The most problematic of all fridge water leaks is the water line that connects your faucet to the water and ice dispenser. About once a month, pull the fridge away from the wall to see if water is dripping or there’s a puddle – or signs of one – on the floor. If you see a water stain on the floor or molding, that’s an indication that water has seeped through where damage can occur.

My Fridge Leaking

Other possible causes of a water leak include:

Water line isn’t properly connected to the fridge.  This is a common occurrence, especially when delivery workers or homeowners attempt connecting the water line themselves.

A crimp or break in the water line. If you spot water behind the fridge, there’s a good chance there’s also water inside one of the cabinets leading from the fridge back to the faucet. The water line, in that instance, will need to be repaired or replaced.

Blocked defroster. A blocked defroster can stop defrost-cycle water from draining properly. Try clearing out the small drain by pouring hot water into it. Remove any debris with a pipe cleaner.

Drain pan. Sometimes the drain pan itself can leak. Check for cracks.

Filter. Refrigerators with filters can leak if the filter is the wrong size or not installed properly.

What to Do if the Water Line Leaks

Once you’ve determined that water is leaking from the water line connection:

  • Turn off the water supply to the fridge. The shut-off valve is often located under the sink.
  • Unplug the fridge or turn it off at the circuit breaker.
