What Causes Low Water Pressure, and What Can Be Done About It?

Water pressure.

When it’s right, you don’t think about it.  When it slows down – and stays slow – something needs to be done before you get totally frazzled.

Let’s say, for example, you can’t effectively wash your dishes while someone else takes a shower.  Or, more commonly, two people can’t take a shower at the same time…not unless you have nothing but time on your hands!

Causes Low Water Pressure

Water pressure may be on the weak side for a couple of reasons. If you and several neighbors are experiencing the same problem, we suggest you call your water company – especially if the problem exists throughout your home.

If the problem is confined to just a faucet or two, check the aerators. They’re the round, screened, screw-on tips of faucets.  Aerators mix water and air for a smoother flow, and you can easily replace them yourself.  Same goes for a dislodged or worn out washer.

If that doesn’t get things back to normal, the problem most likely resides inside your pipes.  Consider the following:

  • Calcium and other mineral deposits restrict water flow and might even require a water treatment solution to prevent any further internal pipe corrosion.
  • If you have city water, your home is equipped with a pressure regulating valve – these are prone to fail over time, thus causing low water pressure. If you have well water, your system may be equipped with a pressure switch which can malfunction; you also could have sediment build-up in your pipes.
