You see, on average, 14% of your total annual water bill comes from leaks in your pipes, toilets, faucets, ice maker, and other household locations.

Toilets account for the greatest percentage of leaking water, and the two most common sources are a cracked tank or dried up or cracked gasket. External toilet tank leaks are easy to spot and therefore easy to take care of in timely fashion. But if you notice your water bill going up and can’t figure out why, here’s a tried and true method to determine if you have an internal tank leak. Pour about 3 tablespoons of red food dye in your tank and check back about an hour later. If you see any red colored water in the bowl – you guessed it – your tank is leaking from the inside and needs either to be repaired or replaced

Here’s one that most people don’t even consider a leak. The next time you take a shower, check to see if water also is dripping from the tub spout. Another thing to check is your showerhead once your turn off the faucets. If it continues to leak for up to two minutes, you should consider replacing it. And if you do see water dripping from the tub spout during a shower, next time place a bowl under it. If it collects at least a coup and a half of water then, on an annual basis, you’re wasting a significant amount of wasted water.

But what about water leaks in places not so easy to spot, like underneath your refrigerator or in your crawl spaces? For starters, any time you clean behind your refrigerator, check for pooled up water. But here’s the thing: the smaller the amount of water, the greater the potential for waste and damage. That’s because water may be seeping into your floorboards and, if gone unchecked, long enough, that can cause structural damage to wood, ceilings, and walls. And it can also create a fire hazard if the water comes in contact with exposed or frayed electrical wires
