How to Winterize Your Jasper Home

Winter is filled with all sorts of fun, family activities, and time spent making memories. Winterizing your home may not be at the top of that list, but making the time for even a few precautionary measures will help prevent common mishaps that could otherwise put a damper on your winter fun.

Replacing or cleaning your furnace filter monthly is one of the easiest ways to keep your heating system working efficiently.  It’s a great way to reduce your heating bill, too.

Sealing off drafts is a fairly simple step.  The tricky party, though, is that you first have to find them.  Here’s one more way to do just that:  just shine a flashlight along the edges of windows and doors. If there are spaces where the light can be seen from the other side, guess what?  You have a leak.  A little weather-stripping or added caulking should do the job nicely.

Insulating exposed pipes is a necessary precaution against cracked, frozen or busted pipes. Simply cover exposed pipes, like those in garages or unfinished basements, with foam insulation. On especially cold nights, it’s also a good idea to open cabinet doors to allow warm air to keep your indoor pipes from freezing.

Changing the direction of your ceiling fans is a simple and cost-effective way to help keep your home well heated this winter. Since warm air rises, running the fan on reverse rotation will actually help pull that warm air back into the room, keeping you a little cozier.

Properly storing out-of-season equipment, like gas grills, lawn mowers, and garden hoses, will prevent damage to these items that could result in having to replace them next year.
