How to Reduce Your Energy Costs in Jasper & Dubois

It’s no secret that electric bills continue to skyrocket. While the latest appliances and electronics are more energy efficient than ever, our demands for electricity have done little to bring down our monthly bills.

But don’t just take those higher prices lying down!  Fight back now by grabbing a flashlight as we’re going to show you how you can become an energy detective.  Reduce Your Energy Costs

Check your attic.

Does your attic have adequate insulation? If the insulation covers the top of the joists by a few inches, you’re probably ok. If it’s even with the joists (or lower), you might want to add more. While you’re up there, make sure that any openings for pipes or duct work are properly sealed, and that vents are not blocked.

Follow that draft.

Sealing gaps and cracks that allow air to escape could save you 5%-30% on your energy bill. Inspect windows and doors, areas where different building material meet, gaps along flooring and baseboards, and even switch plates and electrical outlets. The fewer the air leaks, the more effectively and efficiently you can heat and cool your home.

Look for “phantom loads”.

Phantom loads are items that are plugged in, and drawing energy, but not in use, like chargers, TV’s, DVD players, game consoles, computers, just to name a few. Walk around your house, start unplugging, and start saving up to 8% on your utility bill.

A bright idea.

Consider how you use lighting in your home. Could you benefit from adding lower-wattage task lighting instead of using overhead lights? Or swapping out regular light bulbs for CFLs? The latter are a bit more expensive, so don’t feel like you have to replace them all at one.

Home heating and cooling system inspections.

For this one, you’re going to need a real “detective:” a trained and professional HVAC technician from Messmer Mechanical.  At your request, we’ll inspect your home heating and cooling systems once a year each.  The result will be reduced energy expense, cleaner indoor air, longer system lifespan, and lower cost of repairs.
