How to Prevent Injuries at Home

As Dorothy famously exclaimed in the Wizard of Oz, “there’s no place like home.”  It’s your personal retreat, where memories are made, children raised, and comfort realized.

Home is also where many injuries occur, especially among young children and the elderly. You can help prevent many such injuries by following there 12 basic home safety tips.

1. Keep floors and stairs clear of children’s toys, shoes, and other tripping hazards.
2. Make sure area rugs don’t curl up and use rug pads to keep them in place.
3. Don’t overcrowd electrical outlets; also, avoid running extension cords from one area of a room to another.
4. Use stair runners or anti-slip strips on hardwood stairs.
5. Use night lights to keep halls, stairs, and bathrooms lit during the overnight hours.
6. Remove fragile and breakable items from a child’s reach.
7. Keep cleaning supplies, medicines, and other dangerous chemicals locked and out of reach.
8. Make the area around your stove and oven a child and pet-free zone while cooking.
9. Install grab bars in your shower and bath to help prevent slips and falls. Never leave a child unattended in the bathtub.
10. Always wipe up spills and messes on slippery surfaces.
11. Make sure your home is equipped with a working fire extinguisher, smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.
12. Keep the phone number to your child’s pediatrician and poison control center within easy reach.
