How to Detect Hidden Water Leaks in Jasper and French Lick

We’ve all heard the term “ignorance is bliss”. Well, in the plumbing world, we see time and again how ignorance – as in, not knowing what to look for or not being fully aware of certain consequences – can cost you dearly.  And that’s definitely the case when it comes to hidden water leaks.

First, there’s the matter of wasted water.  A slow leak, for example, may not seem that significant, but when you consider than an average leak can waste 10,000 gallons of water a year – enough to run over 250 loads of laundry.  Next, hidden leaks can often take a long time before you’re even aware they exist.  And by the time you do spot symptoms, significant structural damage could have been caused from the growth of mold, mildew, bacteria, rotting wood, and so on.

That’s why you want to be ever vigilant in your hunt for leaking water, and here are several ways you can do just that:

1. Monitor your water bill on a regular basis and take note of unexplained increases.
2. If you suspect a leak, record the reading on your water meter. Do not use any water in your home for at least 3 hours, then check the reading again. If there is a difference, you have a leak.
3. Starting at or below ground level, inspect all accessible pipes in your basement, crawl space, and garage for signs of water. Don’t forget utility sinks, washing machine connections, and hot water heater hoses.
4. Examine all plumbing fixtures and pipes in your kitchen and bathrooms. Check under sinks and around toilets.
5. Remove toilet tank lids and look for water refilling at random. You can put a drop or two of food coloring in the tank. If the water in the bowl changes color (without flushing) after some time, you’ve found a leak.
6. And finally, take note of peeling paint or wallpaper, areas of moisture under cabinets and under carpets, and signs of mold growth. While these might be a result of roof issues or poor ventilation, they can also be cause by leaks from concealed plumbing pipes.
