How to Cool Your Home for Less

Which of the two choices below best describes the first thing you think of after opening your electricity bill during the summer?

1. “Are we buying stock or just paying our bill?”
2. “This seems about right.”

In the dead of summer here in Jasper and other southern Indiana communities, the pendulum often swings towards option “A” – especially for families with older AC systems. But it doesn’t have to be that way.  Not when you start practicing these energy savings tips:

• Install one or more ceiling fans. If you have the right amount of ceiling height, installing one or more ceilings fans does much more than add aesthetic appeal. By running them counterclockwise during the summer, the fans’ rotation pulls the cool air back up toward you, thus reducing the amount of cool air you need from your AC system.

• Consider installing a whole-house attic fan. Having one enables you to turn off your AC system when the outdoor temperature matches or falls below the indoor temperature. That’s when it‘s time to open some windows and turn off the AC system. You’ll sleep like a baby and save a considerable amount of money, too.

• Keep your shades and curtains drawn during the hottest times of day, especially those windows with a southern exposure.

• Run your washing machine and similar appliances during the early morning or late evening hours. Each one generates heat, and you don’t want your air conditioner working any harder than it already does during the day.

• Consider installing a whole-house dehumidifier when indoor humidity starts to negate the added comfort provided by your AC system. The older the system, the less effective it becomes are removing excess humidity.
