How to Clean a Washing Machine

When was the last time you cleaned your washing machine? If your answer falls somewhere between “Well, let’s see now…” and “I’m supposed to do that?”, keep reading.

This whole concept may seem counter-intuitive, but just because it’s routinely filled with laundry detergent and water doesn’t mean your washing machine is getting clean. In fact, the dirt and grime that it removes from your clothes – along with detergent residue – tend to build up over time.

Before You Clean

Identify Machine Type – A top-loading machine will require a slightly different approach than a HE (High Efficiency) front or top loader.

Choose Your Cleanser – First, check your machine’s manual for recommended cleansers. You want to ensure the one you use does not cause damage or void a warranty.

How to Clean a HE Washing Machine

• Select the “clean” cycle, or the hottest water setting possible.
• Choose the extra rinse cycle if available. If not, run it manually after the regular cycle.
• Fill the bleach dispenser with your cleanser of choice.
• Fill the tub to the highest level and run the machine.
• Once the cycle has ended, use a microfiber cloth dipped in vinegar to clean the door gasket and surrounding area. Carefully pull the seal back and inspect for mold or mildew.
• Use vinegar or soapy water to wipe any laundry add-ins from the machine’s dispensers. Wipe clean with a wet cloth and dry.
• Wipe the controls and outside of the machine with a microfiber cloth dipped in vinegar, and dry with a clean cloth.

How to Clean a Top-Loader

• Choose the hottest water setting and the longest cycle.
• Fill the tub to the maximum level, then pause the machine.
• Add 1 cup of bleach or 4 cups of white vinegar to the water and let the machine agitate for a couple of minutes.
• Pause the machine again and let it sit for an hour. Meanwhile, dip a microfiber cloth into the water, wring it out, and clean the top of the drum, agitator, and the inside of the lid.
• Remove any dispensers you can and clean the areas beneath and around them.
• Clean the control panel and the exterior of the machine and dry with a clean cloth.
• Restart the machine to complete the wash cycle.
