Camping Safety Tips: Ferdinand and French Lick
Whether it’s a two-week retreat or a quick weekend getaway, nothing has the potential to bring a family closer, help us get in touch with nature, and create lasting memories like a camping trip.
Still, to make the most of the experience, you need to be well prepared. So before you dust off the sleeping bags and pack up the camper, learn how to protect your family from all the dangers that might just be larking in your personal corner of the great outdoors.
Camping Necessities
Pack a well-stocked first aid kit along with flashlights, extra batteries, walkie-talkies, whistles, compass or GPS, rain gear, map of the area you’re heading to, sunscreen, sunglasses, and plenty of drinking water and non-perishable food items.
Buddy System
Never hike or explore the area alone, always go with a friend. Always tell someone else of your plans and your expected time of return. While we live in a day of texts and tweets, don’t assume that your cell phone will work if and when you actually need it to.
Weather Conditions
Pay attention to local weather conditions before and during your trip and prepare accordingly. Depending where you’re headed, hot summer days can turn into bitterly cold nights, so make sure you have plenty of warm clothing and blankets. Be prepared to take shelter in case of extreme weather.
Cooking Safety
Keep your food cold at all times to avoid spoilage and make sure you have plenty of clean drinking water at all times. Do not operate an outdoor stove or grill around another heat source, like a campfire, and only cook in an open, well-ventilated area.
Fire Safety
Pick a safe place away from tents, overhanging branches, and other flammable items to build your fire. Make a ring around the fire area and surround it by rocks. Have a bucket of water, a shovel, and a portable fire extinguisher nearby to put out an out of control fire. Never leave a fire unattended and make sure it is completely extinguished before leaving the area or going to bed.
