How to Convert a Garage into a Workshop

Whether you’re a woodworker, car enthusiast, or have another hands-on passion, a garage workshop provides a convenient space to enjoy your favorite activity. Except, that is, during winter when you’re forced to either put your projects on hold or attempt to work while shivering in the cold.

So, what’s the answer? Sure – turn your garage into the safe, comfortable, and convenient space you can use all year long.

Function

The extent to which you modify a garage will depend on its purpose. Consider the projects you plan to take on and tasks you’ll need to perform to help guide your design and layout. For example, if your goal is car repair, you’ll need proper drainage and waste removal. Want a hydraulic lift? Make sure your garage has the necessary space and support.

Electrical

Will you be able to function with existing electrical outlets or is an upgrade required? Larger tools and equipment may need a special voltage outlet or dedicated circuit. To avoid overloading, electrical circuits for workshop use should be separate from the house. And don’t forget ground fault outlets for any area that may become exposed to water.

HVAC

To make a workshop more comfortable year-round, consider adding insulation to the ceiling and walls. A fan or space heater may provide some comfort in mild temperatures but won’t do much during the hot or cold seasons. While a window or wall-mounted air conditioner can offer some relief, you’ll be left out in the cold come winter. Therefore, consider installing a ductless mini-split system that can deliver both cooling and warmth with whisper-quiet operation.

Plumbing

A large utility sink is essential for cleaning up and keeping dirt and stains away from your home’s bathroom. If you use any dangerous chemicals, a first-aid eyewash station can be a beneficial add-on.

Lighting

Sure, that single lightbulb or automated garage door light is enough to help you navigate a standard garage, but they won’t provide the proper illumination needed for a workshop. Fluorescent light fixtures are an inexpensive option that provide light over a large space while spotlights or track lighting can illuminate a specific area over a workbench or tool area. Portable fixtures can provide lighting for temporary situations.

Work Area and Storage

A functional work area and adequate storage space depend on the purpose of the garage workshop. For example, a car enthusiast or hobbyist will want rolling tool chests to bring needed tools close to the car. A workbench with headroom and seating works well for woodworking, painting, or electronics projects. Certain hobbies require smaller parts, tools, and accessories so a cabinet with clear drawer fronts offers easy identification.
