How to Plan Your Fall Garden

With summer winding down, now’s the time get working on a fall garden as there’s still plenty of time to grow vegetables and herbs.  Plus, it’s cheaper and less work than a summer gardens since most plants are on sale, you use less water, and it makes for less work come spring. Here’s what you need to know to get started:

Clean up and clear out:  If you’re choosing your fall garden space to replace the summer garden you’ll need to remove the old plants, the used up mulch, and turn the soil. You can also create a vertical fall garden, or use pots which can be brought in before the first frost.

The herb garden: There are lots of herbs that thrive in the cool weather such as parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme (anyone feel a song coming on?), chives, lavender, cilantro, and mint. Get planting and by winter you’ll be well stocked!

Roots: Most root vegetables are hardy and thrive in the cooler weather. Plant beets, carrots, turnips, and even potatoes for a fall harvest.

Greens: Greens are a great choice for your fall garden. Lettuces and leafy greens need a lot of water and can get burned in the sun, making them harder to grow in the summer. Fall is the perfect time to plant them when the weather is gentler, and there is less watering, thus saving you time and money. Hardy greens such as kale, mustard, bok choy, and broccoli rabe all flourish in the fall and, with a plastic or winter cover can even survive the snow or frost!

Preparing for spring: Get a leg up on spring by planting potatoes, garlic, onions, greens, and strawberries now.
