How to Fake a Clean House

Whether it’s a friend just “dropping by” at the last minute, a planned dinner party for 8, or a full-blown holiday gathering for 30, sometimes the last thing we have the time (or energy) for is making our home look neat and tidy, and company ready.

Sound familiar? If so, don’t get discouraged – not with these 7 quick and easy cleaning shortcuts to make your home shine from top to bottom in minutes.

1. Make dirty dishes disappear by giving them a quick bath in soapy water before hiding them in the dishwasher until you are ready to run it.

2. Give your bathroom vanity or counter a quick wipe with a damp cloth and hide make up and toiletries in a basket or drawer.

3. Corral loose toys, game pieces, stuffed animals, and other toys in an unused pillowcase and hide them in a closet until the guests leave and you (or your kids) have time to organize and put them where they belong. Stack books and board games in a neat pile in the corner.

4. Gather dirty garments and temporarily hide them in the washing machine until you can sort and wash later. Have clean clothes that need to be folded and put away but no time to do it? Let them sit tight in the dryer until the guests leave.

5. Sweep dry mud, debris, crumbs, and pet hair off the floor, or use a broom vac. Use a mop (or wet, soapy rag) for spot-cleaning wet mud or food stains off floors.

6. Sprinkle tea leaves or coffee grounds inside your fire to keep rising dust at bay and diffuse the scent of stale embers.

7. Welcome guests and eradicate unpleasant odors by lighting a candle in your favorite scent or boiling a stick of cinnamon on the stove top.
