How to Observe National Safety Month in Jasper & French Lick, IN

When we think of keeping our loved ones safe, we often think of the dangers that lurk away from home, like reckless driving, theft, and random acts of violence. But some of the biggest threats to our safety lie where we’d least expect them – right in our own homes.

Luckily, many of the accidents caused by household safety hazards can easily be prevented. And during the month of June, we celebrate National Safety Month by identifying household safety dangers and practicing safe behaviors.

Here is a safety checklist help you make your home safer for those you hold near and dear to your heart.

• Prevent trips and falls by keeping your floors free of electrical wires and toys.
• Prevent slips by installing grab bars and anti-slip mats in your bathtub and shower.
• Set your hot water heater to 120 degrees to help reduce the risk of burns and scalds.
• Keep medications locked away from curious children and place household cleaners in locked cabinets or far out of reach.
• Never leave your baby unattended in the bathtub, on a bed, or changing table.
• Keep toys with cords and small parts away from young children.
• Practice fire safety; have a plan in place in case of a fire and test your smoke detectors routinely.
• Put candles and fireplace fires out before leaving the house or going to bed.
• Tether tall pieces of furniture to the wall.
• Monitor your child’s online activity.
• In case of a power outage, have a family emergency kit handy. Include bottled water, flashlights, batteries, and perhaps some board games to keep everyone entertained.
