6 Ways to Conserve Water
While no one can single-handedly solve all our planet’s environmental issues, everyone can do their part. The same is true in most of life’s endeavors.
Take water conservation, for example. Why is it so important? First, only 1% of the world’s water supply is drinkable. Next, the more water you conserve, the more energy you save. What’s more, water conservation is critical for the survival of endangered species, reduces the need for costly wastewater treatment facilities, and more.
Here are a few simple ways to start conserving more water at home:
- Turn off the faucet while shaving or brushing your teeth.
- Before taking a shower, place a bucket under the showerhead to collect the water otherwise wasted before it’s warm enough for you to step in. You can later use that water to wash your car, water plants, clean the kitchen, and so on.
- Don’t wait to get a leaky faucet fixed – do it right away. Even a slow leak can waste up to 20 gallons of water per day.
- Try cutting a few minutes off your time in the shower.
- Insulate your water pipes. It’s easy and inexpensive to with pre-slit foam pipe insulation. You’ll get hot water faster plus avoid wasting water while it heats up.
- Replace that old water-guzzling toilet with a new dual-flush model. A new dual-flush toilet, professionally installed by Messmer Mechanical, consume about 1.1 gallons for a half flush, and 1.3 gallons per a full flush. Older toilets consume 3-5 gallons.
