Homemade remedies not only are environmentally friendly, but often outperform retail chemical drain cleaners.
Some home repairs can at first seem a little overwhelming, but unclogging your drain shouldn’t be one of them. Especially since there are several green – and often very effective drain cleaning methods you can employ without having to resort to the harsh chemical liquid drain cleaning liquids.
- Vinegar and baking soda. These are the two superheroes of natural cleaning. Both products are inexpensive and almost always on-hand. To put their powers to work for you, start by pouring ½ cup of baking soda (and a tablespoon or more of salt for an extra boost) down the drain. Follow that with ½ cup of white vinegar. After a few minutes, pour another ½ cup of vinegar down the drain and wait for a half hour. Then pour a gallon of boiling water down the drain. Repeat these steps if the drain is still moving slowly.
- Plunger. Your plunger isn’t just for the toilet. It can also loosen a clogged sink or tub in no time.
- Hanger. A wire coat hanger can be a great tool for pulling clogs up out of the drain. Hair is a notorious culprit for clogging tub and shower drains but sometimes it settles in the drain just out of reach. Using a coat hanger with a hook at the end could be all it takes to remove the clog and clear the drain.
- Prevention. Stopping a problem before it starts is the best home remedy available. Use the vinegar and baking soda method as a preventative treatment once every couple of months. It’s also a good idea to keep grease, hair, and other non-water soluble substances out of your drains to be disposed of in your trash.
