How to Protect Yourself from the Sun in Dubois & Daviess Counties, IN

Protect Yourself from the Sun in Dubois & Daviess Counties, INWhile the calendar might declare June 21st as the first day of summer Sun safety, we all know that Memorial Day (unofficially) kicks off the summer season. And what better way to welcome the new season by spending time outside with family and friends – outdoors, for a change!

But before you head out to the park, beach, or your own backyard barbeque, make sure you keep yourself and your family safe from the sun’s harmful UV rays. You see, even small amounts of unprotected sun exposure can lead to sunburn, eye damage, and even skin cancer over time. But you don’t have to dress up like a mummy or become a recluse to properly protect yourself.

Here are a few simple – but important – tips for being “sun safe.”

Wear sunscreen.

  • Select a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF rating of 30 or more.
  • Apply it generously 15 to 20 minutes before going out in the sun.
  • Remember the top of your ears, your neck, and tops of your feet.
  • Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, or more frequently if you’ve been swimming or sweating excessively (even if you’re using waterproof sunscreen).

Protect your head.

  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat to prevent your head and face.
  • Wear UV-blocking sunglasses in bright sun.

Cool off.

  • On especially hot days, take frequent breaks from the sun by going indoors or finding a shady spot.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure between 10am and 4pm (peak hours).

If you DO get a sunburn…

  • Alleviate pain and heat with a cool – not cold – bath. And allow your skin to air dry or pat it gently with a towel.
  • Apply aloe vera gel to help ease discomfort and heal sunburned skin.
  • Help rehydrate the skin by applying a moisturizing cream. Choose one without added fragrances as they tend to dry out skin.
  • If you have a severe sunburn and the skin starts to blister, call your doctor.
