The grass may still be awfully brown, and temps continue their fight to get above freezing, but t spring is right around the corner, at least according to the calendar.
And while outdoor home maintenance may have to wait a couple more weeks, it’s never too early to get the inside of your home ready to welcome spring with open arms.
So set aside a weekend and prepare your home for the warmer weather ahead – whenever it decides to show up – with these home maintenance tips.
- Replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and make sure your fire extinguishers are charged and ready to use.
- Use a damp rag to dust your ceiling fans.
- Clean your refrigerator and freezer inside and out. Toss questionable food from the freezer, wipe down shelves, drawers, and doors. And pull the fridge out so you can vacuum and dust the coils.
- Clean or replace the furnace filter. Not only does a clean filter allow your furnace to operate more efficiently, it traps dust, pollen, and other airborne pollutants so you can breathe easier.
- Wash all your windows and replace any broken screens. Also check for cracks around the frames and seal them to prevent heat loss.
- Deep clean your carpets and area rugs. Regular vacuuming is great, but it doesn’t get deep enough into the fibers to remove dust mites, pet hair, and dirt that settles over time.
- Dust baseboard heaters and air vents to enable more efficient operation and better quality indoor air.
- If you have a two-sided mattress, flip it around to prolong its lifespan. And while you’re at it, do a deep vacuuming and dusting under your bed to get rid of dust mites. Don’t forget to vacuum the mattress and box spring, too.
Soon, it also will be time to have your air conditioning system professionally tuned up and inspected. And that’s just one of the many ways Messmer Mechanical helps keep you and your family comfortable, all year long.
