The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970 in response to growing concern over our impact on the environment. Today, over 1 billion people join forces around to make our planet a more sustainable place to live and, every year, Earth Day helps give new life to the new movement.
You can do your part by participating in various Earth Day events in your community, or heading up your own event.
Visit a local farm! Chat with the farmers, and maybe lend them a hand. Teach your kids the importance of eating fresh, local food.
Plant a tree, some shrubs, a vegetable garden or flowers on your property. If you don’t have the space outdoors, try small pots or planters.
Grab some trash bags and clean up a local park or your own neighborhood. And don’t forget a separate bag for recyclables.
Start a compost pile. Instead of throwing those food scraps out, use them to nourish your garden.
Have your children help you make non-toxic, eco-friendly, and budget-friendly household cleaners.
Find ways to conserve water and energy in your home: turn off lights, TVs, and video games that are not in use; unplug chargers and appliances that are not often used; swap out your light bulbs for lower wattage or compact fluorescents.
Have every member of your family pick a new vegetable to try, preferably something you can get from a local, organic farm.
Head to your local library – if you can walk or bike, even better – and take out some books related to Earth Day or the environment and share them with your children for story time.
